Method 1: How to Lock/Unlock Online (Official)
This is the most common method using the myAadhaar portal. It takes less than 2 minutes.
Login to Portal
Click the “Lock Now” button above. Login to myAadhaar dashboard using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
Navigate to Security Settings
Scroll down on the dashboard and find the tile labeled “Lock/Unlock Biometrics”.
Activate Lock
Read the warning, check the declaration box, and click “Next”. Your biometrics are now instantly secured.
How to Unlock?
When you need to verify (e.g., at a Ration shop), login again. You will see two options: “Unlock Temporarily” (10 mins) or “Disable Lock”. Choose temporary for safety.
Method 2: SMS Method (Without Internet)
No internet? No problem. You can use the UIDAI SMS service (1947) to secure your data. Ensure you send SMS from the registered mobile number.

🛑 Locked Aadhaar & Forgot VID?
If you enabled “Aadhaar Lock” and forgot your VID, you cannot login. Here is the fix:
Send SMS: RVID [Last-4-Digit-Aadhaar] to 1947.You will receive your VID via SMS. Use this VID to login and unlock your Aadhaar.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Will I stop receiving Pension/PM Kisan money if locked?
No. Locking biometrics NEVER stops incoming money (DBT). It only stops outgoing authentication (someone trying to withdraw money or use your ID).
Q: I lost my registered phone. How to unlock?
This is a critical situation. Since you cannot receive OTP, you cannot unlock online. You must visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra with valid ID proof for manual assistance.
Q: Is there any charge for locking?
No, this is a 100% free security feature provided by the Government of India.
Q: Does “Temporary Unlock” close automatically?
Yes. If you choose “Unlock Temporarily”, the system keeps it open for 10 minutes and then automatically locks it again. This is the safest way to do KYC.
